The journey from WAR to PEACE in my body happened at different stages.
The initial invitation came in the form of illness.
In my previous post, I shared that for decades I felt victimized by my body and in turn, I bullied my body.
I was underfed, overtrained, under slept, over-caffeinated, and because I thought skipping meals was a virtue, I had no feeding schedule. My circadian rhythm was all over the place.
As a result, my mind was raising, I had anxiety, and I couldn’t stop moving. I was always in a hurry.
I was under a huge amount of physiological and emotional stress.
So, when I suffered “unexplainable” debilitating fatigue and mental fog, I was forced to STOP.
PAUSING was the first step.
I dropped everything that wasn’t absolutely necessary and -while contemplating the idea that my body wasn’t the enemy- I started taking care of my BASIC NEEDS.
I created schedules, had 3 good meals a day, prioritized my sleep, learned how to rest, and started doing breathwork to calm my very agitated nervous system.
The next step was paying attention to what was happening in my MIND: The stories, habits, and patterns that were causing unnecessary PAIN and STRESS. I questioned them, took distance from them, and started practicing SELF-COMPASSION.
EMBODIMENT was next. Embodiment is nothing more than getting grounded or “jumping back” into your body.
Due to modern stress, trauma, or habits, we tend to be disconnected from our bodies. But HEALING starts with the awareness of our bodies. (I know, that isn’t what we are taught!)
I dedicated time to paying attention to the feelings and sensations in my body. It wasn’t easy at first. They were either deeply uncomfortable or boring, but I persevered.
Then, I learned EMOTIONS (I always had so many) live in our bodies and that if you don’t process them, the body holds on to them -oftentimes manifesting them as physical symptoms.
I learned it’s impossible to connect to INTUITION if you’re not grounded, or in your body. And that even WISDOM and SPIRITUALITY are embodied.
In the meantime, I was collecting pragmatic information about how to feed and move my body.
I learned about FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE which looks for the root cause of the problems instead of the whack-a-mole game of just dealing with symptoms.
I learned things like: Excess weight is driven by the hormone insulin and how to deal with it, not all calories are the same, what you eat affects how you feel, and WHEN you eat is as important as WHAT you eat.
Along the way, I had HELP.
It’s very hard to see our own BLIND SPOTS. I needed objective compassionate souls to hold space, help me question assumptions, and guide me in connecting to the Innate Wisdom that heals.
